Who goes jogging without running shoes? Dancing ballet without slippers? Outside of Bangalore, I met men working in a granite quarry without boots on.
I was on my bike, pedaling south towards the M. M. Hills. On the outskirts of town, I stopped to look into a small granite-cutting facility, the Maa Vaishnavee Stonex India Pvt. Ltd. Huge blocks of rock lay in the compound. Teams of Indian men hoisted up great slabs of rock – sometimes with the help of a crane and sometime just using muscle power. The workers were wearing sandals. I wondered how many toes had been permanently crushed.
Because nobody at the granite business spoke much English, I just poked around with my camera as much as I liked. When I was about to leave, a man drove up and wanted to know who I was and what I was doing. I told him, I was just curious and taking pictures.
“OK – No problem”, he said. “Enjoy India!”
