APRIL FOOLS! I’m a Big Fat Liar…

OK I lied.

I didn’t actually make it to the northern most point in Europe on the bike. The touristic look out point is not truly the top of the world. If you want to really reach the farthest northern point on the European continent, you have to turn off the main road and hike there. I met a German chap and we hiked the 5 hour round-trip trip, basking in Norway’s golden summer sun. There’s a little book and pen waiting for the dedicated few. When you make it there, look for my name. I’m there. 14 July 2013.

Besides the scenery, the Nordkapp is not really a particularly interesting place to visit. I didn’t quite understand why so many tourists in motorhomes quested to this spot on the globe. As a destination for an ultra run, bike ride or something else human-driven, it is ideal. All of the landscape within the Arctic Circle is astounding. To my eyes, it is what I imagine the moon to look like in technicolor. Bright green moss covers the rock like a carpet. It’s spongy walking around. No trees anywhere. Wild reindeer with pale grey fur roam in the hills and it is crazy thing is how they can walk up and down the steepest of inclines like mountain goats.

A few days after I reached the turning point, I boarded with my bike, the Finnmarken, one of the Norway’s Hurtigurgen ships. In olden days, before good roads up north were built, the Hurtigurten ship was what linked all the small towns all along Norway’s coasts together delivering letter, packages, and goods. Today they still transport some larger bulk goods but mainly the boat is filled with retired grandmothers who book cabins, all meals included.Previous / NextIMG_1109
