THEYYAM • The Ritual in Kerala

Theyyam is a ritual performance with hundreds of variations, depending on the performers, gods represented and local customs. This was filmed close to Kannur, India. During the ceremony, it is believed that the god incarnates the performer. Therefore, after the dance (or performance) believers gather around the god to communicate with him regarding their wishes or needs. The ceremonies can go around the clock for a day or several days. This video was shot about 8 am on a Saturday morning and was preceded by several performances in the preceding night (and early morning).
